How Fujitsu Engages with Global Suppliers to Decarbonize its Supply Chains

Fujitsu, a leader in technological expertise and innovation since 1935, is deeply committed to its environmental responsibilities. As part of its ambitious goals, the company aims for zero emissions by 2030 and zero greenhouse gas emissions across its global value chain by 2040. To achieve this, Fujitsu is focused on decarbonizing its value chains and particularly on reducing Scope 3 emissions. In 2023, Fujitsu started implementing the PACT methodology to enhance supplier engagement and gather accurate, standardized product carbon footprint (PCF) data.
In this insight, we unpack the key drivers and strategies Fujitsu undertook in its Scope 3 decarbonization journey.
Drivers to Join PACT and Achieve Supply Chain Transparency
To effectively decarbonize its supply chain, Fujitsu recognized the need to:
- Establish data consistency through unified calculation standards
- Create platform to monitor CO2 emissions and track reductions
- Utilize analytical tools to reduce emissions across the supply chain
- Establish secure sharing and collaboration while ensuring data
Fujitsu’s Supplier Engagement Strategy
Fujitsu launched an extensive outreach program to engage suppliers in PCF calculations, initially focusing on gathering data for laptops before expanding to 60 suppliers across four continents. The company organized individual meetings with each supplier, created instructional videos, and provided hands-on training sessions, addressing any concerns regarding data accuracy and the system's necessity. This personalized strategy has to date enabled one-third of suppliers that joined in the outreach program to effectively measure PCFs using product-based or organization-based methods.
Overcoming Challenges
Fujitsu faced several challenges, including suppliers' concerns over confidentiality and over the complexities of PCF calculation and data sharing via API integration. To address these issues, Fujitsu scheduled around 80 follow-up meetings emphasizing the importance of transparency to decarbonize and fostering open communication channels among all parties involved. This approach helped resolve issues, streamlined collaboration, and generated significant insights and learnings.
Timeline and Progress
- Kick off: Briefing sessions for 60 companies
- +6 months of individual follow-ups resulting in approximately 80 meetings
- +7 months System operation briefing
- +8 months System Go Live
- +9 months First data linkage complete
Results and Future Outlook
To date, Fujitsu has successfully linked PCF data through API integration between suppliers and its ESG Management Platform, following the PACT tech specifications. The engagement with suppliers not only improved data accuracy but also fostered a sense of responsibility among suppliers in their sustainability journeys.
Fujitsu’s team is currently validating the PCF data shared, and the supplier engagement program to gather and exchange PCFs aims to continue in 2025, with the aim to further expand the number of suppliers sharing data via their PACT-conformant solution. We would like to promote cooperation with other industries based on the experience of this initiative.
